The Art of Recology is a transformative initiative that underscores the educational and inspirational power of art created from discarded materials. Since its inception in 1990 in San Francisco, the Recology Artist in Residence (AIR) Programs have expanded to four cities: San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Astoria. These programs support artists who repurpose waste materials, challenging perceptions and fostering reflection on consumption habits. In Portland, the GLEAN program is a collaborative effort between Recology, cracked pots (an environmental arts organization), and Metro (the regional government managing garbage and recycling). Similarly, in Astoria, the Coastal Oregon Artist Residency (COAR) represents a partnership between Recology and Astoria Visual Arts, amplifying the impact of artistic innovation in sustainability across different communities.
