The Closet first formed in 2011 by former Board President Kim Schoonover, after seeing an increase of requests for clothing, including boots, coats, hats, and mittens. The Closet is a dedicated space in the district, housed in the ALC (Area Learning Center - 2449 Orchard Lane, White Bear Lake) where families in need can come in and browse through clothing, coats, shoes, etc (anything that can be worn head to toe) for their students.
When students in our school district present a need for clothing, they are able to shop for items needed, free of charge. Students and families are referred to The Closet by school administration staff and a personal appointment is scheduled for the family or student to visit. For some kids, feeling like a star means blending in, not standing out. A sporty White Bear themed sweatshirt or pair of new leggings can go a long way in helping a needy student feel confident - like they fit in.
